This pathway is for students interested in software, IT support, networks, data, cybersecurity, design and digital product work.
The useful thing about technology is that you can start now. Most of what you need to learn first is free, and evidence that you built something counts more here than in almost any other field.
The unhelpful thing is the noise. A lot of online advice about this industry is sales material. This pathway sticks to what you can verify and what actually gets people hired.
What you will be able to do

- Explain why support, testing and data roles are the most common ways into the industry.
- Identify the school subjects that matter for degree routes, and the routes that need less mathematics.

The industry runs on a wide set of roles. Software developer. Quality assurance tester. IT support technician. Network technician. Systems administrator. Data analyst. Cybersecurity analyst. User experience designer. Technical writer. Project or product coordinator. Digital marketing and analytics.
Most people do not start as a developer. Support desk work, testing and data entry that grows into analysis are the most common doors, and they are respectable jobs that teach you how systems actually break.
One correction worth having early: cybersecurity is rarely an entry-level job. Most people arrive there after working in support, networks or development first, because you cannot secure something you do not understand.
In Ghana, employers include telecoms, banks and fintech companies, outsourcing and services firms, NGOs, and a large freelance and remote market. In Canada, they include software companies, banks, government, retail and health systems, hospitals and consultancies.

In Ghana, ICT is taught in senior high school and Elective ICT is available in some programmes. University computer science and related degrees normally require credits in the core subjects including Core Mathematics, and several require Elective Mathematics, so check the specific programme. Technical universities offer HND programmes in computing and networking, which have their own requirements and are a genuine route.
In Canada, computer science degrees usually require Grade 12 mathematics at the university-preparation level, and many require advanced functions and calculus. Ontario also offers computer science courses in Grades 11 and 12, which are useful but not always required. College diplomas in programming, networking and IT support generally require less mathematics and lead directly to work.
So the honest summary is: mathematics is the gate for the degree route, and the college or HND route is a real alternative rather than a lesser one. Decide which gate you are aiming at.

A finished small thing beats a half-built ambitious thing every time.
Good first projects: a one-page website about something real, such as a school club or a small business; a spreadsheet that calculates something useful for your family and explains itself; a short program that solves a repetitive task; a simple game; a form that collects something and shows the results.
Write a log as you go. What you were trying to do, what broke, what you tried, what fixed it. The log is often more impressive than the project, because it shows you can debug.
If you used an AI tool, say so and say what you checked yourself. Being able to explain every part of your own project is the thing that separates people who learn from people who collect.
Safety rules that are not negotiable. Never put a password, key or token in a project you share. Never include anyone's personal information. Do not put your school, home address or phone number in a public profile.

Ask what they do in a normal week and how much of it is meetings. Ask how they got their first job and what got them the interview. Ask what a junior person is expected to know on day one, and what they are not expected to know. Ask what they would ignore if they were starting today.
Bring your project and ask them to find the weakest part. Ask them what they would want you to be able to explain about it.
Safety: do not share access to any account, do not share screenshots containing personal data, and do not accept unsolicited offers of paid remote work, test tasks that involve moving money, or requests to install software. Those are common scams aimed at young people wanting tech work. Get guardian approval if you are 12 to 18.
