This pathway is for students applying to computing programmes or going after a first technical job.

Two things decide outcomes here. Prerequisites, because computing degrees are often blocked by a specific mathematics course rather than by overall grades. And evidence, because a small number of well-documented projects you can explain will beat a long list of course names.

It also covers how first jobs are actually obtained, which is mostly co-op, internships, support roles and referrals rather than open applications.

  • Confirm every prerequisite, especially mathematics, and every deadline from the official page.
  • Present two or three projects with documentation you can defend in an interview.
  • Plan study and certification costs, including examinations that must be renewed.
  • Describe how people realistically get their first technology job in Ghana and in Canada.
  • Prepare for a technical interview and hold a backup route that still builds experience.

Steps

1

Prerequisites first, then deadlines

In computing, the prerequisite is what stops people, not the overall average. Check it before anything else.

In Canada, many computer science and software engineering programmes require specific Grade 12 mathematics courses, commonly advanced functions and calculus, and being short of one removes you regardless of your other results. College diplomas usually require less. Check each programme page individually, because they differ within the same university.

In Ghana, confirm whether the programme requires Elective Mathematics as well as Core Mathematics, and what electives are accepted. Technical university HND admissions run on their own timetable.

Then record deadlines: application, any supplementary form, and any scholarship that closes earlier. Ontario applications go through the central application centre for universities and a separate service for colleges, with other provinces running their own systems.

Do this

  • Check the exact mathematics prerequisite for every programme on your list.
  • Confirm whether Elective Mathematics is required where you are applying.
  • Record every deadline, including supplementary forms.
  • Set reminders two weeks before each date.

Present two or three projects, properly

5-8 hours

Choose two or three projects, ideally different in kind: something you built for a real user, something that solves a technical problem, and something that shows data or design work.

For each, the documentation should answer: what problem, for whom, what you chose and why, what broke, how you tested it, and what you would do next. Include the failure. People who describe only successes read as inexperienced.

Be accurate about your role in group work, and about AI assistance. If asked in an interview to explain a line of your own code and you cannot, the whole application loses credibility.

If a programme asks for a written or recorded supplementary application, treat it as seriously as the main one, and check its separate deadline.

Do this

  • Select two or three projects that show different kinds of work.
  • Document each with problem, decisions, testing and next steps.
  • Be accurate about your role in group work and about AI assistance.
  • Be able to explain any part of your own project on request.

Money, including certifications that expire

Beyond tuition, this field has recurring costs: examination fees for certifications, renewals, and sometimes hardware or cloud usage.

In Ghana, look at the government scholarship secretariat, district assembly support, institutional aid, the national students loan scheme, and employer sponsorship. Some employers pay for certifications in exchange for a commitment, so read the terms.

In Canada, look at provincial student aid, entrance awards, and co-op earnings, which for many students are the main way a computing degree is paid for.

Much of the learning itself is free. Prioritise paid options only when they give you something free resources do not: a recognised certification, structured teaching you actually need, or access to equipment.

Record each funding option with its official page and closing date, and treat guaranteed-job promises as marketing, not fact.

  • Check whether co-op earnings are a realistic part of your plan.
  • Only pay for training that gives you something free resources cannot.

How first technology jobs are actually obtained

Very few first jobs come from sending applications into a form and waiting.

In Canada, co-op and internship programmes are the main pipeline, and students apply for them during the degree on a fixed recruitment cycle. Support desk and QA roles are common entry points, and many developers started there.

In Ghana, first roles commonly come through national service placements, internships with telecoms, banks, fintech and services companies, referrals, and freelance or contract work that turns into something steady. Remote work for overseas clients is real but competitive, and it attracts scams: never pay to be hired, never receive or forward money for an employer, and be cautious with any role that avoids a written contract.

Expect the first role to be maintenance, testing, support or small fixes on someone else's system. That is where you learn how software behaves once real people use it.

Do this

  • Find out when co-op or internship recruitment happens for your programme.
  • Write down three realistic first job titles in your lane.
  • Ask a mentor how their team actually finds junior hires.
  • Refuse any role that asks you to pay, or to move money, or to work without a contract.

Practice interview and a backup that still builds experience

Ask a mentor for a practice technical interview: a problem to work through out loud, and questions about your own project. Ask them to interrupt and challenge you, because that is what a real interview does.

Good backups here still build experience. An HND or college diploma with a later top-up or transfer. An IT support or QA role while studying part time. Certifications in the running lane, which are cheaper and faster than a degree. Freelance or volunteer work building something small for a real organisation.

A year of support work plus finished projects is a genuinely strong position to reapply from, and in this field it is often better preparation than going straight into a degree.

Do this

  • Do one practice technical interview and explain your reasoning out loud.
  • Have someone question you on your own project code.
  • Write two backup routes that still build real experience.
  • Agree with a guardian what you will do for each outcome.
