Questions families ask

What do Category A, B and C mean?
They are the groupings the Ghana Education Service uses for school selection, and they set how many schools of each kind a BECE candidate may choose: no more than two from Category A, no more than three from Category B, and up to all eight from Category C or the pilot private schools. They are not a ranking of teaching quality.
How many schools can a BECE candidate select?
Eight, ranked in order of preference, with a programme and a residential choice for each: five as boarding and three as day. Day schools should be within the catchment area the candidate can reach. A candidate who wants purely TVET programmes selects eight technical institutes from Categories A, B and C. The form must be signed by a parent or guardian and handed to the head teacher of the JHS.
What is the difference between an SHS, an SHTS and a technical institute?
A senior high school (SHS) offers the general programmes — General Science, General Arts, Business, Agricultural Science, Home Economics, Visual Arts and Languages. A senior high/technical school (SHTS) offers those and a Technical programme with elective technical subjects such as Applied Electricity or Building Construction. A technical or vocational institute (TVET) offers trade programmes such as Welding and Fabrication, Electrical Engineering Technology or Catering and Hospitality, listed in the register as Appendix 1.
Where do the school codes and programmes on this site come from?
From the Register of Courses for Public Senior High Schools, TVET and Pilot Private Schools, 2026, published by the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana TVET Service. Names, codes, programmes and day or boarding status are shown as printed there. The register prints a few codes for more than one institute; those pages say so, and every code should be confirmed on the official selection form.
Which schools have facilities for students with special educational needs?
The register lists the second-cycle schools with facilities for students who are visually or hearing impaired in its Appendix 3. Filter the directory by "SEN facilities" to see them; each school page states the facility as listed.
Is eStudent360 part of the Ghana Education Service?
No. eStudent360 is an independent, free mentoring platform run by the FacioTech Foundation. This directory copies facts from the official register so students and parents can compare schools; it does not replace the official selection process, and it carries no rankings.

Where this comes from

Listed from the Register of Courses for Public Senior High Schools, TVET and Pilot Private Schools, 2026 (2026), published by the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana TVET Service for school selection. Names, codes and programmes are as printed there. A handful of codes are printed for more than one institute; those pages say so. Always confirm a code on the official selection form.

What the categories mean

Categories A, B and C are the groupings the Ghana Education Service uses for school selection (they set how many of each a candidate may choose). They are not a ranking of teaching quality.

eStudent360 is not affiliated with the Ghana Education Service. This directory is free, carries no rankings and sells nothing. If you work at one of these schools, see how schools partner with us.
