This pathway is for students close to applying for science, mathematics or research study, or close to a first technical job. The decisions here are administrative as much as academic: which schools, by when, with which documents, paid for how.

It also covers what happens after the offer. The first two years of most science degrees are heavier on mathematics and laboratory reports than students expect, and the first jobs are usually assistant or technician roles rather than research posts.

Every date, requirement and funding rule here must come from the official source that owns it. Never pay anyone who promises admission or a scholarship.

What you will be able to do

  • Hold a shortlist of programmes with each deadline copied from the official page and written in your own calendar.
  • Draft a personal statement and secure a referee who has actually seen your work.
  • List funding routes in Ghana and Canada with the official source and closing date for each, and recognise scholarship scams.
  • Describe what the first two years of study and the first realistic job in this field involve.
  • Have a written backup plan that does not depend on one offer.

Lock the shortlist and the real dates

Deadlines are the part students lose on. Write them down from the source.

In Ghana, university admissions usually open once WASSCE results are out, and each institution runs its own timetable. Technical universities and the HND route have their own dates, and they are a real option, not a consolation prize.

In Canada, Ontario secondary students apply to universities through a central application centre and to colleges through a separate one, with programme deadlines that differ and some programmes filling early. Other provinces have their own systems. International applicants often face earlier deadlines than domestic ones.

Build one list: institution, programme, deadline, what must be submitted, and where you read it. Put every date in a calendar with a reminder two weeks ahead.

Do this

  • Write down each programme with its deadline and the page you took it from.
  • Check whether any programme has a separate, earlier supplementary deadline.
  • Set calendar reminders two weeks before each date.
  • Include at least one technical university, HND or college option on the list.

Write the parts only you can write

Grades are the filter. The written parts are where you become a person rather than a number.

If a programme asks for a statement, write about one specific thing you did and what it taught you, not about loving science since childhood. Your investigation log is the raw material. Say what failed.

Some Canadian programmes run a supplementary application with written or recorded answers, separate from the main application and often with an earlier deadline. Some Ghanaian programmes interview.

References: ask a science teacher or a supervisor who has actually watched you work, ask them early, and give them your project log and your list of deadlines so they can write something specific.

Do this

  • Draft a statement built around one real project, including what went wrong.
  • Check every programme for a supplementary application and note its separate deadline.
  • Ask a referee at least a month ahead and give them your log and dates.
  • Ask one adult to read your draft for clarity, not to write it for you.

Sort out the money from official sources only

Funding exists but it is scattered, and the deadlines usually sit earlier than the admission deadlines.

In Ghana, look at the government scholarship secretariat, your district assembly, the financial aid or student welfare office of the institution itself, the national students loan scheme, and community, church or employer sponsorship. Ask the institution directly what it offers its own students.

In Canada, look at your provincial student aid programme, entrance scholarships that universities award automatically on grades, and awards offered by community organisations, employers and unions.

Record each one with the official page you found it on, who is eligible, what documents it needs and when it closes. If anyone asks you to pay a fee to be considered, or guarantees you funding, it is a scam. Real awards do not work that way.

Do this

  • List every funding route with its official source and closing date.
  • Check citizenship, residency, subject and grade conditions for each one.
  • Note which ones need a reference letter, and ask early.
  • Report or ignore anyone who asks for payment or guarantees a result.

Know what the first years actually look like

The first two years of a science degree are usually more mathematics, statistics and laboratory report writing than most students expect. People who struggle are often people who dropped maths early, not people who dislike science.

Get work experience while you study. In Canada, ask your department about paid summer research placements for undergraduates, several of which are funded through the federal science and engineering research council and administered by universities, and about co-op programmes. In Ghana, ask about vacation attachments, and note that national service after graduation often places people in laboratories, agencies and schools.

Realistic first jobs are laboratory technician or technologist, research assistant, quality control analyst, field officer, data analyst or teacher. Some of those need a specific professional certification on top of the degree, so check who regulates the role before you commit to it. Research careers usually mean a master's degree and often a doctorate afterwards.

Do this

  • Check the first-year course list of your top programme and note the mathematics content.
  • Find out which work placements, co-op terms or vacation attachments are available.
  • For one target job, find out whether it needs a licence or certification beyond the degree.
  • Write down what you would need to do to reach that job within five years.

Mock review, then build a real backup

Ask a mentor to read your application as if they were deciding, and to say which part is weakest. Ask for a practice interview if your programme interviews.

Then write the backup plan properly, because most people need one. Backups that work in this field: an HND at a technical university with a top-up degree later; a college diploma in Canada with credit transfer into a degree; applying to a related programme with less competition; or taking a year to resit a subject and reapply with a stronger result.

A backup is only real if you know its deadline too.

Do this

  • Have a mentor review your full application and name the weakest part.
  • Practise one interview or recorded answer out loud.
  • Write two backup routes with their own deadlines and requirements.
  • Agree with a guardian what you will do in each outcome, before results arrive.
