Creative Arts, Design and Communication

ARTSADVANCED

This pathway is for students at the point of applying to creative programmes or looking for first paid work. At this stage the craft is only half of it. The other half is submitting in the right format, by the right date, with the right permissions.

It covers editing a portfolio down, writing a statement that adds information rather than repeating the images, being clear about collaborators and about any AI involvement, and funding creative study, which is usually harder than funding other subjects.

It also sets out what the first five years usually look like, because almost nobody starts as an art director or a lead designer.

Learning Outcomes

  • Submit portfolio, audition or supplementary requirements in the exact format and by the exact date each school sets.
  • Cut a portfolio to the requested number of pieces and defend the order they appear in.
  • Write a short statement that tells the reader something the work does not already show.
  • Handle permission, credit and any AI use openly and correctly.
  • Describe realistic first roles in the creative industries in Ghana and Canada, and how people move up from them.
