This pathway is for students thinking about nursing, midwifery, pharmacy, medical laboratory work, physiotherapy, radiography, nutrition, community and public health, paramedic work, care work and medicine.
Medicine gets the attention, but nursing, midwifery and the allied health professions employ far more people and have more entry points. Several of them start with a diploma or a certificate rather than a long degree.
Every one of these jobs is regulated. Somebody has to sign off that you are safe to practise, and that changes what you must do and prove. This pathway starts you on the right side of those rules.
Learning Outcomes
- Name at least eight health roles beyond doctor, and say where each one works.
- State the subjects normally required for nursing and allied health entry in Ghana and in Canada.
- Explain that qualifying and being licensed to practise are two separate steps, and name who does the licensing.
- Complete one safe piece of health-related experience with a written reflection.
- Explain what confidentiality means and why you never post about a patient.
