Technology, Computing and Digital Product

TECHNOLOGYBEGINNER

This pathway is for students interested in software, IT support, networks, data, cybersecurity, design and digital product work.

The useful thing about technology is that you can start now. Most of what you need to learn first is free, and evidence that you built something counts more here than in almost any other field.

The unhelpful thing is the noise. A lot of online advice about this industry is sales material. This pathway sticks to what you can verify and what actually gets people hired.

Learning Outcomes

  • Name at least six technology roles and say which of them write code all day.
  • Explain why support, testing and data roles are the most common ways into the industry.
  • Identify the school subjects that matter for degree routes, and the routes that need less mathematics.
  • Build one small working thing and document how you built it.
  • List the things that must never appear in a public project: passwords, keys, personal data.
