This pathway is for students interested in social work, psychology, community development, youth and child work, NGO work, sociology and human services.
The common misunderstanding is that this work is mostly listening and encouraging. Much of it is statutory duties, case records, assessments, and decisions about scarce resources, made under time pressure and sometimes challenged.
The second misunderstanding is about titles. In several of these professions you cannot use the job title unless a regulator has registered you, and the degree alone does not do that.
Learning Outcomes
- Name at least six roles in this field and say who employs each one.
- Explain the difference between studying psychology and being registered to practise as a psychologist.
- Identify the school subjects that support entry to social sciences and social work.
- Map one community issue using public information, without collecting anyone's private details.
- State the ethical rules that apply when a young person researches an issue affecting real people.
