About this opportunity

The Yenching Academy of Peking University runs a fully funded master's programme built around the interdisciplinary study of China, hosted on Peking University's Beijing campus. Roughly 120 new Yenching Scholars enrol each year and international students make up about 75 per cent of the student body, so the cohort itself is part of the education. It is a strong fit for a student who wants a serious grounding in China — its politics, economy, history and society — rather than a narrow single-discipline degree.

The fellowship covers tuition fees, accommodation, a monthly stipend, one round-trip travel fare and field study costs. Entry requires at minimum a Bachelor's degree in any field and a demonstrated, specific interest in the interdisciplinary study of China. English proficiency scores are required, with minimums including IELTS (Academic) overall 7.0 and TOEFL iBT overall 100.

Applications for the 2027 cohort opened on 1 September 2026 and close on 30 November 2026 at 9:00 am Beijing time, with final admission decisions for international candidates released around April 2027. The application asks for a personal statement, a statement of research interest, a curriculum vitae, official transcripts, diploma or enrolment certificates and two academic letters of recommendation. One trap to plan around: students and alumni of Yenching's Partner Universities must go through their home university's internal pre-selection process before submitting to the Academy, so check whether your university is a partner well before the deadline.
