University of Ghana Students Financial Aid Office Scholarships

The Students Financial Aid Office at the University of Ghana, Legon was established in August 2005 to help needy but bright students meet the cost of a Ghanaian university education. It administers a dozen named schemes, among them the E.P.I Scholarship, the EY CSR Scholarship, UG Sponsorship, the SRC Yi Bi Boa Scholarship Scheme, the Fondazione Edu Scholarship, the Larry Addo Scholarship, the One Student One Laptop Initiative, the PIE Scholarship, SESTGSA, the Baker Hughes Scholarship, the UGBS/AXIS Pension Scholarship and the UGBS Scholars' Scholarship. Aid is drawn from government, the University and private sources, and comes as a full scholarship, a partial scholarship, a fee arrangement, or on-campus work-study and part-time job opportunities.

The general criteria are the same across the office: a student must be a Ghanaian citizen, be enrolled as a regular student in a full-time programme of study, be able to demonstrate financial need, be brilliant, and be making excellent academic progress as determined by the University. The office is explicit that "Financial aid provided by the University involves financial support towards academic fees only", with additional elements added as resources become available, so students should budget for accommodation and living costs separately unless a specific scheme says otherwise. Individual schemes go further: the Educational Pathways International scholarship covers "tuition, books, as well as room and board, and a little extra" for four years, subject to maintaining at least a B (3.0) CGPA, and requires a WASSCE aggregate of 11 or better for Level 100 entrants from an impoverished part of the country.

Timing matters here. The office states that "The application process for financial aid for continuing students commences in November of each year. The awards are made by the end of the second semester, to be utilized in the following academic year." Individual schemes then publish their own deadlines - the Educational Pathways International (E.P.I) call for the 2025/2026 academic year closed on Wednesday 11 February 2026, and the 2026/2027 UGBS Scholars' Scholarship for undergraduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds in the University of Ghana Business School closed on Wednesday 29 July 2026 at 3:00 pm. Applicants should watch the announcements list at ug.edu.gh/financialaid from November and apply scheme by scheme rather than waiting for a single university-wide round.
