Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme

The Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme is the European Union's programme for learning mobility inside Africa, managed by EACEA on behalf of the Directorate-General for International Partnerships and run with the African Union Commission. It funds consortia of African higher education institutions to organise exchanges, and it pays scholarships to African students, trainees and university staff who move to a partner institution in a different African country. It sits under the Youth Mobility for Africa flagship of the EU-Africa Global Gateway Investment Package, and its priorities include inclusive mobility with a focus on women's participation, climate change and the green transition, and employability in green jobs.

There are three student-facing routes. Master or doctoral level mobility is open to students who reside in Africa and are nationals of an African country, and who are registered or admitted at a higher education institution established in Africa or hold a degree from one; that mobility can be short-term or last a whole programme. Traineeship mobility is open to students enrolled on a bachelor's, master's or PhD programme at one of the African institutions in an Intra-Africa consortium selected from 2023 onwards, and places trainees with a private or public organisation in a country other than their nationality and residence. Staff mobility covers academic, administrative and technical staff at participating institutions. Ghanaian institutions are among the participating universities listed on the scheme's scholarship page.

The scholarship provides a living allowance and insurance, contributes to travel and visa expenses, covers participation costs such as tuition and registration fees, and can contribute to research expenses depending on the available budget. Scholarship holders with disabilities can receive additional support, and the grant to consortia includes a specific special-needs assistance category. There is no single application form or single deadline: you check the list of selected Intra-Africa consortia, visit the website of the project that interests you, read its entry requirements and scholarship conditions, and apply directly to that project. Students already at a participating institution can ask their International Relations Office for help. Most consortia work in agriculture, engineering, information and communication technologies, environment and climate change.
