Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (Ghana)

The Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (Fulbright TEA) sends serving secondary school teachers to the United States for a six-week non-degree exchange. It is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, funded by the U.S. Government and administered by IREX, and the U.S. Embassy in Accra runs the Ghanaian competition. Selected teachers take tailored graduate-level seminars at a U.S. host university covering new teaching methodologies, student-centred learning, content-based instruction, lesson planning and instructional technology; complete a practicum of at least 40 hours alongside a U.S. partner teacher in a nearby secondary school, where they observe, co-teach and present to U.S. students; and join an online professional learning community with other international educators. Final selection is made by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

To be eligible you must be a Ghanaian citizen and a current full-time secondary-level teacher of English, English as a Foreign Language, maths, science, social studies, foreign languages or special education in those areas. You need at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent, roughly three years of full-time teaching experience by the start of the programme (with preference for teachers with around five or more years), oral and written English strong enough for academic seminars and U.S. classrooms, and a commitment to keep teaching afterwards. TOEFL or similar scores may be requested later in the selection process.

The programme is fully funded. IREX arranges international travel and provides an air ticket plus a travel allowance for checked bags and incidentals, and teachers are reimbursed for round-trip travel between their home city and the international airport. Participants live on or near the host university campus in housing arranged for them, and receive a maintenance allowance covering class supplies, household and personal items, cultural activities and a daily food stipend. Dependants may not accompany teachers. The Ghana application deadline for the 2026-2027 programme was Saturday 28 February 2026; the published timeline runs on to a Spring 2027 cohort starting in late January 2027 and a Fall 2027 cohort starting in September 2027, so watch the U.S. Embassy Accra page for the next country deadline, which has fallen in February in recent cycles.
